Cheeky Rascals Picnic in Queen’s Park Voice

We are always thrilled to see what the lovely children of Cheeky Rascals Child Minding group have been up to in the Wildlife Area.  They have such fun and use all of the park to it’s best advantage.  Wendy Hutt wrote this piece for the Queen’s Park Voice about their sponsored walk and picnic.

Preparing for Queen’s Park Gardens’ Festival

DSCN4434.jpgWe’re opening the Wildlife Area for everyone to enjoy on Saturday. You can meet some of the regular gardeners, pick up information and have a look at what we’re doing. We may even have something fun for the kids to do.

The Cheeky Rascals Childminders Group have also made some fun contributions to area but out latest project has been the Grand Marigold Bug Hotel. This project has been close to the heart of the main driving force of the Friends group, Ray. He sourced most of the materials and even found a lovely container which we have made into a roof terrace for the hotel.

Last weekend, we were finally able to plant it in preparation for everyone to see it during the Festival.

Due to the kindness of a donation from the head gardener at the Royal College of Physician Garden of Medicinal Plants we were able to fill it with wonderful indigenous flowers that will attract bees, bugs and butterflies.

Ray has also spread some more bark in the hotel area to make it easier to walk around.

Spring is here

The first day of Spring has passed and the park changes almost daily.

Have you noticed that a new flowering cherry tree was planted in the rose garden in the middle of winter? Its first blossoms are showing now.

and the blackbirds appreciate variety of ground cover.

In the wilder corner, you can just see a flowering currant coming into bloom as well.

As you leave the rose garden, you can’t miss the cheerful yellow of the Forsythia.

Among the bushes just outside the rose garden, the flowering cherry is in full swing.

Elsewhere around the park are various kinds of berberis

and even the humble daisy is pleased to see the sunshine.

The blackthorns are brightening up the hedges around the park railings.

and if you keep your eyes open while you’re walking around the estate, there are some treats in the gardens. This lovely camellia is in a street very near the park.
