Summer Festival Day 2017

The Queen’s Park Summer Festival was a great success in spite of the unsettled weather.  We were lucky enough to have the shelter of the trees in the Wildlife Area.

Thank you to everyone who came to say hello, took part in our quiz and/or the snail races.  We hope you all had fun.  The lovely ladies next to us were doing some incredibly colourful work with t-shirts and dye.

Surprise Refreshments

We had a steamy session in the heat today but it was well attended by all ages and skills. We achieved a lot and learned some new things too.

Hassan’s father brought a most welcome end to the session by kindly supplying much needed refreshment!

Our next gardening session will be on  in August. Do come and say hello to us at the Summer Festival on 5th August.

Busy Bees

So many busy bees.

We have been so lucky with the weather recently and so many people have joined us to swell our ranks this year. It is very gratifying to know that the community want to help maintain our little park, both with us on Saturdays and with Ulla’s HCGA team on Thursdays.

We are still working hard to keep the weeds at bay in the triangular rose bed and Ulla’s sessions have planted some wonderful aromatic plants around the border.

Next week, we shall return to the Wildlife Area to tidy and weed. Do come and join us on 8th July any time between 10am and 1pm.

Ray and his team have put all the air pollution monitors in place in the park and in various positions around Queen’s Park.  We will report the findings over the next few weeks but want to thank Ray and Simon for their hard work.

Short Course, Free for Westminster Residents

The wonderful HCGA have put together a diverse range of instructive sessions to encourage responsible and informed participation in community gardening projects.

Please email bookings@nullhcga.org.uk or call 07773 348 294 if you want to join. The idea is to take the full course but there may be chances to join individual trips.

Queen’s Park Air Pollution Monitoring

88391125-1862-4bd7-b932-012d79e34173

Traffic on our roads surrounding Queen’s Park Parish is not reducing. More cars, buses and lorries mean more Nitrogen Dioxide in the air we breathe.

You may remember we raised concerns last year in our blog.

We want to identify the levels of Nitrogen Dioxide and other pollutants in our local air.

Come join us on Saturday 3rd June and help us put our monitoring tubes out.

We’ll meet in Queen’s Park Gardens at 10am, the entrance to Queen’s Park Gardens is on the corner of Third Avenue and Ilbert Street W10 – please note…this is not Queen’s Park located in Brent. Meet us by the football pitch. We will pair up into teams of two or three. Tubes will be placed at least two meters high, possibly higher, so if you can bring a footstool or folding ladder (ideally something easily portable) this will be helpful. Once mounted, tubes will be in position for four weeks.

During this four week period if anyone is interested in measuring particulate matter, solid and liquid particles suspended in the air, around Queen’s Park Gardens and surrounding roads please contact us for the date and time. Date and time will be posted here as well.

There will be another opportunity in four weeks time to help collect our pollution monitoring tubes. These tubes will then be posted off to a lab and their contents analysed for Nitrogen Dioxide concentrations.

All equipment will be checked before beginning. The forecast is for excellent weather, so this will prove to be a fantastic Saturday.

Please contact the Friends of Queen’s Park Gardens for more information or contact our tireless organiser,   Ray Lancashire.

Open Age have moved to The Avenues

After a long and successful base at the Beethoven Centre, Open Age have now moved to The Avenues. The new term starts next Tuesday.

This is a resource for the mobility impaired, elderly or just looking for some good company.  Learn to do new things, visit new places and make lasting friendships within your local community. Membership is free and most classes only ask for a peppercorn contribution.  If you are housebound, there are telephone-based reading groups as well.  Do you know anyone over 50 years whose well-being might benefit from this wonderful organisation.
